Teaching, Mentorship & Service

Dr. Calancie’s academic work has included teaching, mentorship, institutional service, and scientific review. Across these roles, he has contributed to the training of medical students, graduate students, residents, fellows, and early-career scientists in neuroscience, neurosurgery, neurophysiology, rehabilitation, and biomedical engineering.

Teaching

Dr. Calancie has taught across undergraduate, graduate, medical, and resident education.

His teaching has included courses and lectures in:

  • Neural control of movement

  • Human neurophysiology

  • Integrative neuroscience

  • Neurobiology of disease

  • Medical neuroscience

  • Clinical neurophysiology

  • Spinal cord injury

  • Intraoperative neuromonitoring

  • Motor systems and rehabilitation

At Upstate Medical University, he has contributed to medical student neuroscience teaching and to resident education in neurosurgery, neurology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Mentorship

Dr. Calancie has mentored graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, biomedical engineering trainees, and junior colleagues.

His mentorship has included supervision or advisory roles for trainees working in:

  • Biomedical engineering

  • Neuroscience

  • Cell and developmental biology

  • Clinical neurophysiology

  • Spinal cord injury research

  • Intraoperative neuromonitoring

  • Cauda equina repair

  • Motor control and rehabilitation

Former trainees have gone on to academic, clinical, biomedical, and industry positions.

Scientific Review

Dr. Calancie has served as a scientific reviewer for NIH and state-level research programs, including work related to spinal cord injury, neuroplasticity, rehabilitation, and clinical neurophysiology.

His review service has included:

  • Standing member, NIH CSR Study Section: Clinical Neuroplasticity and Neurotransmitters

  • Ad hoc reviewer for NIH/NINDS and NCMRR study sections

  • Scientific reviewer, New York State Department of Health Spinal Cord Injury Research Board

  • Reviewer for multiple scientific journals in neuroscience, neurophysiology, neurology, neurosurgery, rehabilitation, and spinal cord injury

Institutional Service

Dr. Calancie has served on university and departmental committees at the University of Miami and Upstate Medical University.

His service has included:

  • University of Miami Institutional Review Board, including service as Vice-Chair

  • Upstate Medical University departmental promotion and tenure leadership

  • Upstate Medical University College of Medicine Faculty Appointments and Promotions Committee

  • Graduate student admissions committee service

  • Search committee service
